Storyline - Advanced Actions

Articulate Storyline is one of the most popular eLearning authoring tools today.  But what exactly can it do?

The basics:

Storyline is a widely used software program in the eLearning industry.  As a Designer, you can use it to create interactive eLearning courses and other instructional materials.

Some of the key features of Storyline:

  • Storyline supports a variety of multimedia elements, including audio and video clips, images, and animations. This allows Designers to create engaging and interesting courses that use a variety of media to convey information.
  • Designers can create and customize eLearning content with interactivity options for the learner.  This utilizes various elements (such as text, images, videos, and animations) that the learner can drag and drop, or place in order, for example, to reinforce concepts and practice skills.
  • Storyline courses can be designed to be responsive, meaning that they will automatically adjust to fit different screen sizes and devices. This makes it easy to create courses that can be accessed on a wide range of devices, including desktop computers, tablets, and smartphones.
  • Designers can create custom quizzes and assessments (that are SCORM compliant and report to your LMS) to test learners' knowledge and understanding of concepts and skills.
  • Designers can customize the appearance of their courses with a variety of themes, graphics, colors, and styles. They can customize their courses further by using HTML and CSS code, or even use JavaScript to program additional advanced actions.

You’ve probably heard it said that the tool is only as good as the Designer.  Storyline is not a straight out-of-the-box tool- -it requires practice and analytical thinking, as well as design sense, finesse, and planning, in order to use it well.

Some potential cons of using Articulate Storyline include:

  • It can be expensive, particularly for Designers who need to purchase their own annual licenses.
  • It may have a steep learning curve for users who are new to creating eLearning content or need to learn advanced features.

In summary, Storyline allows you to build learner experiences with slide layers, triggers, or states, allowing the learner to have a more interactive experience with learning content.  You can use multimedia, customize course appearance, create quizzes, and more.  As a designer, you can rest assured that your personalized learner content, will make even boring content a little less boring. 😃

I love learning more about Storyline with each project I create.  In my opinion, one key indicator of a growth-oriented Company and software tool is that it allows for user growth by combining our learning and creativity and their new features- -and is responsive to both while always striving to improve and reach new levels of learning and development features to best serve the learner.
